RegFly.com specializes in cheap, affordable web hosting and domain name services. The RegFly.com site was recently purchased from Kevin Medina, owner of the defunct registrar RegisterFly, and re-branded as RegFly. RegisterFly was a company whose owners lied, cheated, and stole, causing many people to lose a lot of time, money, and domain names. That includes myself. It is alleged that despite claims otherwise, the crooks responsible RegisterFly are back in business with RegFly.
A community member over at MetaFilter recently picked up on a post on the NamePros forums alleging that the new owner of RegFly is not the only man behind the curtain, but rather Kevin Medina is involved in the business as well.
What was RegisterFly?
RegisterFly was a reseller of domain names who attempted to become a full-fledged registrar in 2006. As allegations of fraud surfaced against RegisterFly, a power struggle ensued and the proverbial shit hit the fan. Customers claimed to have lost domains due to misappropriated funds, and a class action law suit alleged that RegisterFly intentionally defrauded customers who attempted to register or renew domain names. (source) RegisterFly eventually had their accreditation revoked, and GoDaddy bought out their customer base.
I personally had been doing business with RegisterFly since their days as an eNom reseller. When everything turned upside-down, I nearly lost a number of domains into their black hole of customer service. E-mails, phone calls, and faxes went unanswered until I eventually recovered my domains, which were dangerously close to expiring, through GoDaddy.
Is Medina Back?
The author of the NamePros forum post that alleges Kevin Medina is behind the re-branded RegFly.com. This author is the same person who was behind the RegisterFlies site. Registerflies is a blog that rose up as a voice for the legions of furious RegisterFly customers. Registerflies is now back, investigating what exactly is going on with RegFly.
