Maximum Length of Cat 5 and Cat 5e Network Cables

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Is there a limit to how long my networking cables can be?

Yes, unfortunately you cannot string regular networking cable along for miles and miles. The length limit on these cables is well defined: ethernet cables are limited to a length of 328 feet (100 meters). If you plan on outfitting your palace with network connectivity, you are going to need a little extra hardware.

After 100m, the signal running over your network cables will lose its strength. If you need to extend the reach of your network beyond this 328 ft. limit, you will need to use a repeater. You can find repeaters being sold by all of the household names in home networking: Belkin, Netgear, Motorola, Linksys, et al. Sometimes these devices are also called “extenders”.
