Get Around Thunderbird Installation and Upgrade Errors

I am trying to upgrade my install of Mozilla Thunderbird, but keep getting errors. How can I get Thunderbird to work again?

There is a known conflict between Mozilla Thunderbird and Logitech Quickcam software that prevents Thunderbird from upgrading or installing correctly.

When trying to upgrade, you will receive a message stating that one or more components could not be updated. Choosing to try again just lands you in a continual loop of failing and retrying the upgrade.

When trying to install Thunderbird, you will see the following message:

Error opening file for writing:C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\mozMapi32.dll
Click Retry or try again, or Cancel to stop the installation

Whichever error you are receiving, the fix is simple. As instructed by this Slashdot reader, shut down the Logitech Quickcam software. You should see the icon sitting in your system tray — right-click on it, and choose “Exit”. Retry upgrading or installing Thunderbird, and you should prevail this time around.
