Adium is a popular instant messaging client for Mac OS X, and the Adium team recently added support for Facebook Chat to the software. By configuring Adium to sign in to your FB account, you can converse with your Facebook buddies right from your Desktop. Configuring Adium to work with your Facebook account is nothing short of dead simple.
Upgrade Adium to 1.3
Facebook chat support was added to Adium in version 1.3, so upgrade to the latest version. You can do this by visiting the Adium website, downloading the software, and dragging it into your Mac’s “Applications” folder.
If you already use Adium, you will be asked if you wish to replace it with the newest version. This is ok, so respond “yes”.
Add your Facebook account
Start up Adium and click File → Add Account → Facebook.
Now all you need to do to configure Adium for Facebook chat is give the software your e-mail address and password. Enter the e-mail address & password you use when signing into FB, and click OK.
If you do not want Adium to automatically log you into Facebook chat, uncheck the “Connect when Adium opens” option. There are a few other optional settings on the other tabs (”Personal”, “Privacy”, and “Proxy”), however the fields on this first tab are the only ones that are required.
Tell Adium to connect, and you will see all of your Facebook friends under a new “Facebook” heading.
