Make a Quick, Printable Checklist in Microsoft Word

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Need to print up a quick checklist from your computer? An easy way to do this is to make a bulleted list in Microsoft Word, and change the “bullet” character from a small dot to a box that can be checked off with a pen.

Make Your List

Step 1: make your bulleted list. Just type out each item in the checklist — don’t worry about how things look yet. Here is my list so far:

Insert Check Boxes

Step 2: make your checklist check-able. Highlight everything in the list, right-click on it, and select “Bullets and Numbering…”

The Bullets and Numbering option in Word\'s context menu

If you see a bullet style that you like in the “Bullets and Numbering” window, click on it, click “OK”, and you are done.

If you don’t see one you like, press the “Customize” button and change the bullet character to something fitting for items in a checklist. I changed the Symbol font to “Wingdings”, which has a nice box with a drop shadow.

Manually changing the character used for the list bullet

Click on the character you wish to use, click “OK” to close the “Symbol” window, then click “OK” again to close the “Customize bulleted list” window. Your checklist is now ready to be printed.
