In what is sure to be a topic that changes very frequently, Of Zen and Computing brings you “What’s on my iPhone - Cheapskate Edition”. I’ll run down the applications I am using on my iPhone, all of which are available free of charge in the App Store.
Basic Stuff
Many of the iPhone’s factory-installed applications are the ones that get used most frequently — Mail, Calendar, Notes, and Contacts are all essentials for doing business. The combination of Maps & GPS is very helpful, I am always setting new alarms from the clock, and I use AIM as an SMS replacement in order to save money on my text messaging plan.
The “Settings” shortcut needs to go here because I am constantly turning features on and off in order to save battery life. More on that here.
Social Networking and Various Information Resources
Twitter and Facebook keep me up to date on what friends are doing. Twitter and FriendFeed also keep me on top of current events in technology and the web — FriendFeed lives in Safari’s bookmarks. The Google application is mostly for access its news reader.
Pandora and Last.fm keep my music fresh.
I am experimenting with using Flickr through AirMe, Exposure, and ShoZu.
Yelp and Showtimes are great for tracking down food and entertainment.
And finally, there’s WordPress for the rare case in which I need to post something from the road.
Other Stuff
This final set of applications is what I use least frequently. I do not play many games on my phone, but could not resist downloading PhoneSaber and More Cowbell due to the simple facts that Star Wars and Christopher Walken are awesome.
iPint? A one-time thing.
I like the interface to Apple’s Weather application very much, but downloaded WeatherBug for its radar feature.
Lastly, I stuck the calculator on my iPhone’s very last screen because I would rather do math mentally.
