How to right-click on a Mac

Sunday, July 9, 2006

I just made the switch to Mac and am very used to right-clicking to accomplish various tasks. Can I right click on a Mac?

The one-button mouse symbolizes Apple’s philosophy of keeping things as simple as possible, but it is still possible to right-click your way to the context menu on a Mac.

Method 1: Control-Click

Hold down the control (ctrl) key and click the mouse button. This ctrl-click combination tells your Mac that you want to right-click, and the context menu will appear.

Method 2: Get a two-button mouse

Macs support two-button mice even though Apple’s design is only for one button. Any two-button mouse that is Mac compatible will work, and will let you right-click with the right mouse button instead of the cmd-click trick.

Method 3: Two-finger tap

Reader Matt T. wrote in with another method of right-clicking.

…one more way of doing it (on new Macbooks etc) is to hit two fingers on the trackpad at the same time, works like a charm and is much better than CTRL-click.
