It's called Overtype in Word, and you can tell if it's switched on if the 'OVR' text is highlighted on the bottom toolbar. Bad typists who have to use the Backspace button a lot like me are always hitting 'Insert' as it's right next to it. Yes I’ve been using Word for years and only recently sussed this out!
