Gmail Backup is software that will backup your e-mail from Gmail’s web-based service.
Gmail Backup will download all of your e-mail, folders, and labels from the Gmail service so that you can store the data on your own computer. We’re sure Google has some pretty good backup systems of their own in place, but it can never hurt to keep your important data in more than one place.
Messages saved by Gmail Backup are stored in Microsoft’s .eml format so they can be imported into other e-mail clients.
Before using Gmail Backup, you must enable IMAP. The first half of our article on using Gmail with Apple Mail describes the process for enabling IMAP in Gmail. You can ignore the second half of the article, which discusses the Apple Mail client.
