“Wake-Up Call — Back Up Your External Data” by PCMech outlines some simple tools that you can use to back up the kinds of important data that some people tend to upload and forget about — photos, blog posts, and e-mail.
Journal site JournalSpace recently experienced a complete loss of data, raising questions as to the security of content that people post online. Putting your pictures on a photo sharing site or your words on a blog places the security of that content in the hands of the hosting provider — the PCMech article discourages you from deleting the original files from your computer once they’re online, and lists a few easy-to-use pieces of backup software for this type of content:
- flickredit to download and back up photos from Flickr.
- phpMyAdmin gives you direct access to everything in your blog’s database (just don’t delete anything by accident!)
- KLS Mail Backup for e-mail.
