Rip Your DVDs to AVI Files with bitRipper

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

bitRipper is free Windows software that will rip a movie from a DVD disc and save it on your computer’s hard drive as an AVI file. bitRipper does not require a tremendous amount of memory in order to perform its task, is easy to use, and boasts commercial-grade quality despite being free.

Using bitRipper

bitRipper is supposed to be a breeze to use. Just follow these directions:

  1. Download and install bitRipper.
  2. Insert a DVD disc in your computer’s drive.
  3. Start bitRipper and hit the “Start Ripping” button. You can also select a specific track to rip from the “Track:” drop down menu.

Unfortunately at this point I was unable to get bitRipper to work in my tests. I tried ripping 5 or 6 different DVDs that I own, and got the following message each time:

My problems may have something to do with the fact that I was testing it in Parallels on a Mac. I e-mailed the bitRipper team but did not receive a reply… and their site states that there is no support offered since the program is free. Understandable.

bitRipper obviously works well for others, considering many positive reviews such as “One-Click Free DVD Ripper for Windows” by MakeUseOf.com. Since it seems to be a popular choice for DVD ripping I decided to go ahead and post this link anyway.
