Disable the “drag and drop this icon…” tooltip in FireFox

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

With the release of the otherwise-excellent FireFox 2.0, comes perhaps one of the most annoying “tooltips” we’ve encountered in a while. Many people keep a collection of bookmark folders in their FireFox toolbar, for easy access to the site that they frequent. The easiest way to add bookmarks to this toolbar is to drag the website’s icon from the URL bar to the name of the folder. Go ahead… try it with FireFox 2.

Whenever you try to drag a favorite icon from the URL bar to FireFox 2’s toolbar, FireFox pops up an annoying little “tooltip” that says “drag and drop this icon to create a link to this page”. This might be helpful… in another universe. In this universe, this tooltip gets directly in the way and prevents you from dropping your bookmark into the FireFox toolbar almost every single time.

Thankfully, there is a solution to this drag-and-drop frustration. Phal Kunz from PK’s Blog has the answer for you. In Disable Annoying FireFox Tooltips, PK shows you how to change your FireFox configuration to disable tooltips.
