Run Multiple Versions of IE at the Same Time with Internet Explorer Collection

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Internet Explorer Collection is a package containing every major version of the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser since 1.0 for Windows 95. Internet Explorer Collection is distributed as a resource for web developers to test their projects across many different versions of the popular web browser in order to find IE-specific bugs. Normally only one versions of IE can be installed on a Windows PC at any given time, but Internet Explorer Collection lets you use ‘em all.

Internet Explorer Collection contains IE versions 1.0, 1.5, 2.01, 3.0, 4.01, 5.01, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0. Every version except 1.0 is compatible with Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7. Older versions of Windows are not compatible with more recent versions of IE. The Internet Explorer Collection download page contains a color coded chart which you can use to determine your system’s compatibility with this tool.

I tested Internet Explorer Collection on a Mac with Parallels and XP. The collection partially worked – 1.5 couldn’t open any sites, 4.01, and 5.55 froze up consistently, and 5.01 was unstable. The rest were fine… if you have a web site, it can be very amusing to see how ancient versions of this browser render your design.
