Computers Often Fail — Plan Accordingly

Saturday, March 7, 2009

You simply can’t depend on computers” by Raoul Pop is a rant on the tendency of computers to fail at the worst possible moments. What happened Raoul?

Joking aside, Raoul is a serious point — computers are far, far from perfect and like all things abide by Murphy’s Law: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. I am sure more that a few people suspect that computers secretly worship at the Church of Murphy.

When you need to use a computer to accomplish something important, plan accordingly. If you procrastinate — and like Raoul I will attest to this from personal experience — something will probably go wrong. Burning data to a CD for a client? Make two copies. Maybe three. Need to print your boarding pass for a flight? Boarding pass are usually available 24 hours in advance of the flight… print yours at 23 hours and 59 minutes.
