Configure iTunes for Windows to store your library in a custom folder

Thursday, March 9, 2006

By default, iTunes for Windows will store your music library inside your My Documents folder. There are some situations where you might not want this to happen. Perhaps you keep your music on a computer that’s part of a network domain; with gigabytes of audio files in your profile, logging onto the network is going to take you ages. Perhaps your C: drive just isn’t big enough, and you want to add a new, larger storage volume for your collection. Whatever the case may be, changing the location of your iTunes music folder will take you all of a minute to accomplish.

  1. Click Edit then click Preferences (or press Ctrl+,).
  2. A new window will pop up – click on the Advanced tab.
  3. Next to the box labeled “iTunes Music folder location”, click the Change button.
  4. Another new window will pop up – browse to the new folder where you would like to keep your music and press the Ok button.
