Plenty of people have dusty old MP3s that, for whatever reason, have abnormal volume levels. Some songs are muffled, others are too loud — either way you don’t want to be adjusting the volume of your speakers every few songs. Of Zen and Computing previously published “Fix iTunes tracks with low volume“, which points out an iTunes feature that allows you to adjust the volume levels of individual tracks.
The iTunes feature we detailed does the job, but is really just a temporary fix. The actual volume of the track is not changed — iTunes just remembers to play it softer or louder the next time it comes up in rotation. Tech site Download Squad has another fix for your music, and this time it’s a little more permanent. In “How to normalize your MP3 volume levels (the right way)“, DS links to a utility called MP3Gain. MP3Gain is a program that analyzes your music (up to a folder at a time), and automatically detects and resets it to the correct volume levels.
