From developer site Devlounge comes “Essentials: A Healthier Workspace“. While both Devlounge and their article are targeted at technology professionals, its subject matter applies to anyone who spends a significant amount of their day in front of a computer. Devlounge covers topics such as lighting, monitor placement and posture that all contribute to a healthier you, and lead towards a personal workspace that’s more conducive to productivity.
I’m a pretty big offender when it comes to any list of healthy work environment guidelines. Devlounge says:
“Working in the dark might get you imagination up there, but it certainly won’t be helping your eyes a whole lot. It’s never good to be working on computers in dim lighting, just like how it’s not very good to read in minimal light.
…
“The final thing to be aware of is making sure your posture is perfect when working all day long at a desk. Unless you want to be hunched over, sit straight with your back pressed firmly against the back of your chair.”
I’m a terrible sloucher, which results in me leaning in too close to the monitor screen (despite the fact that I have perfect vision). Maybe I should start following Devlounge’s advice before intermittent back pains and eye strain become permanent.
