.FLV File Type Explanation

.FLV is the file format used for the videos seen all over the web. The file extension .FLV stands for Flash Video.

As an Internet user you’ve seen FLV video all over the place. The clips you see in the video players on all the popular sites — YouTube, Vimeo, Google Video — they’re all delivered via .FLV files. In the past web video was delivered through systems such as Real Player, however these technologies were more difficult to use and required the installation of special software. FLV video on the other hand is delivered through embedded players built with Adobe’s Flash technology, which is supported by nearly all modern web browsers.

Applications

FLV video is primarily played through embeded Flash players on the Web. It can also be played via desktop software such as VLC Media Player, and encoded with programs like Handbrake.
