Fix Internet Explorer 7 When Add-Ons Give It Trouble

Saturday, February 10, 2007

Internet Explorer 7According to technology blog Top Tech Picks, some add-on programs and toolbars can cause IE7 to behave erratically. In particular, the author claims that the Alexa toolbar caused Internet Explorer 7 to close itself at random times. Top Tech Picks suggests that you get to the bottom of things with the following procedure:

  1. Start IE7 in No-Addons mode, meaning that Windows will start up Internet Explorer, but not allow any extra toolbars or add-on programs to load. You’ll get IE7 and nothing more.
  2. If IE7 starts up without a problem in No-Addons mode, then you can deduce that one of your toolbars is what’s causing the browser’s erratic behavior.
  3. From here, you can uninstall add-ons one-by-one from the Internet Options screen until you find the offending program.

For complete instructions on carrying out this procedure, read “IE7 Won’t Start? What To Do.” at Top Tech Picks.
