I forgot my Windows password and cannot get into my computer. Is there a way to reset my password?
There are two ways for you to recover your Windows password – use a password recovery disk or log in as the Administrator and change your account’s password to something you’ll remember. Microsoft has published instructional documents that will help you use either of these methods.
Use a password recovery disk
Windows lets you create a special utility disk called a Password Recovery Disk that handles this very situation. If you have a password recovery disk or want to make one, click on the appropriate link below:
- My computer is a member of a domain on a network.
- This is my home computer, or it is not a member of a domain.
Note: If we’re talking about your work computer, you should talk to your company’s IT department for two reasons. First, they’ll be able to solve this problem for you very quickly. Second, they may have security restrictions in place that prevent you from using the administrative tools necessary to recover your password on your own.
Use the Administrator account to reset your password
If you do not have a password recovery disk, you can use the Administrator account to change your password back to something you’ll remember. Again, if this is your work computer then you should consult your company’s IT department. You most likely do not have access to the Administrator account, so you won’t be able to follow any of these instructions on your own.
To reset your password as the Administrator, go to this Microsoft article titled “How to log on to Windows XP if you forget your password or your password expires” and…
- If you are using Windows XP Professional and your computer is a member of a domain, read the section titled “Windows XP Professional in a domain“.
- If you have Windows XP Pro and are not a member of a domain, or you have Windows XP Home Edition, read the section titled “Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional in a workgroup“.
Worst Case Scenario
If you do not have a password recovery disk and are unable to log into any of the user accounts on your system (including the Administrator account), then unfortunately you may be up a creek. For security reasons, there is no other way to access your system, and you may have to format your computer and reinstall Windows. This will cause you to lose all of the files, folders and documents on your system, so before you do so you might want to find a data recovery service who can back up your hard drive. For recommendations on where to find a reputable data recovery service, consult your computer’s manufacturer, the service department of a local electronics chain such as Circuit City or Best Buy, or someone you know.
