Beverage spilled on your keyboard? Keys infested with months, or years of filth? One surefire way to clean your keyboard is one that you’d least expect: run it through the dishwasher. English tech blog Tech Digest shows us the Unotron Washable keyboards and mice, which can be cleaned with soap and water as often as you like. Unotron keyboards and mice can be cleaned fully under running water, and can be safely immersed in antibacterial soap. Models start at $30, and come wired or wireless.
If you’ve spilled something on your non-Unotron keyboard, you may be able to wash that one clean as well. Most keyboards can survive a dishwasher cycle and be fully functional after drying completely. Scott Moschella’s Plastic Bugs proves that you CAN put your keyboards in the dishwasher — Scott recounts everything he did to get his keyboard clean and then working once again (he doesn’t mention using soap, and I wouldn’t suggest it).
I wouldn’t hesitate to put a cheap $10 - $30 keyboard through my dishwasher, but as Scott warns, neither one of us would suggest you put an expensive model through the jets. Finally, again, make sure the keyboard and its connector are completely, 100% dry before plugging it back into your computer.
