MovieCommander is Really a Malicious Trojan Horse

Thursday, April 5, 2007

MovieCommander purports itself to be a program that access different kinds of movie files, but is actually a trojan horse that can harm your computer. MovieCommander has been making it’s way around the Internet lately according to McAfee Avert Labs (link via usrbingeek). Once it makes it’s way into your system, MovieCommander installes a rootkit and changes your DNS server settings.

A rootkit is a back door to your computer that allows a criminal to gain access. Once the criminal has access, he may be able to control your computer, steal your information, and track your activity.

Changing your DNS server settings allows a virus to forward all of your web browsing activity through it’s own system. Once your requests are filtered through these malicious DNS servers, you can then be presented with fake web sites that attempt to steal your passwords, account information, and credit card numbers. Check out the F-Secure Computer Virus Information page for DnsChanger for more detailed information.

If you have already installed MovieCommander, you should update your anti-virus software, and run a full system scan.
