Drag a picture freely throughout a Microsoft Word document

I inserted a picture into a Word document and want to move it to a different location that where it was originally placed, but when I click on the graphic and try to drag it, nothing happens. It seems to be locked in place - how do I unlock it?

When you insert a picture into a Word document, Word has a few different ways that you can format the picture in relation to the text around it. By default the picture goes in line with the text, preventing you from freely moving it around. In order to move it:

  1. Click once on the picture so that a black border appears around it.
  2. At the top of the screen next to File, Edit, View and Insert is an option labeled Format. Click on it.
  3. A menu of formatting options will drop down. Click on Picture.
    • If you don’t see the word Picture but there is a double-arrow icon at the bottom of the drop-down menu, the Picture option may be hidden. Click on the double-arrow icon to reveal all of the hidden options, then click on Picture.
  4. The Format Picture dialog box will open up. Click on the Layout tab.
  5. Click on either the button labeled In front of text on the ones labeled Square or Tight and then click OK.
    • Each one of these buttons lets you drag and drop the Picture freely throughout your document, but each one also has a slightly different effect on where the graphic is placed in relation to the text around it. Experiment with all three and pick the one that suits you best.
  6. Now you will be able to freely move the picture throughout the document. Click on the graphic, hold your mouse button down and then drag it to your desired location.
