DIY 120GB XBox Hard Drive - Save $100

Monday, April 23, 2007

XBox consoleXBox Scene News has a hack that allows you to choose your own XBox hard drive instead of going with the official $120 drive from Microsoft.

TheSpecialist sent us the update of HDDHackr(info) many of you were probably waiting for. With the release of an official 120GB drive by Microsoft you can now use this tool to make your own 120GB Xbox360 HDD using a Western Digital Scorpio BEVS-LAT drive (that’s a cheap (~80usd for 120GB) SATA 2.5″ PC/laptop drive):

Be warned, this is a hack and as such, pretty technical. Don’t miss the disclaimer about how this process could possibly harm your drive. I’m going to guess this voids your warranty, too.

Why am I writing about this off-topic hack, then? To let you know there are options to Microsoft’s overpriced drive. Gizmodo hits the nail on the head:

“Everybody knows that the Xbox 360 120GB HDD add-on is a total rip-off. I mean, come on Microsoft, who are you trying to fool here? $180 for a 120GB drive? What is this, 2002? Give me a break.”

Sounds a lot like Microsoft’s wireless networking adapter, whose $100 price tag is 40% of a Nintendo Wii. Of Zen and Computing previously covered work-arounds to the MS wireless XBox adapter here, and here.
