Make Mozilla Firefox Work in Windows Vista

Thursday, May 3, 2007

Mozilla Firefox iconApparently, using Mozilla Firefox with Windows Vista has been causing problems for many people, often with the browser refusing to start and issuing the following message:

The program must close to allow a previous installation attempt to complete. Please restart.

I don’t remember encountering this issue, but then again it’s been a while since I used Vista on a daily basis. This issue could be affecting a different version of Firefox that what I had at the time, or the issue might not have been present in the Vista build I’d installed, whatever.

The venerable Lifehacker points out that a fix for this bug has been published in the MozillaZine Knowledgebase, under “Browser will not start up“. The solution is a bit technical, so be sure to follow MozillaZine’s directions exactly as they’re written.
