Apparently, using Mozilla Firefox with Windows Vista has been causing problems for many people, often with the browser refusing to start and issuing the following message:
The program must close to allow a previous installation attempt to complete. Please restart.
I don’t remember encountering this issue, but then again it’s been a while since I used Vista on a daily basis. This issue could be affecting a different version of Firefox that what I had at the time, or the issue might not have been present in the Vista build I’d installed, whatever.
The venerable Lifehacker points out that a fix for this bug has been published in the MozillaZine Knowledgebase, under “Browser will not start up“. The solution is a bit technical, so be sure to follow MozillaZine’s directions exactly as they’re written.
