Dell Offering Ubuntu Desktops - Just What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu logoDell will offer Ubuntu desktops for sale in the near feature, according to this Ubuntu placeholder page they’ve recently set up.

Ubuntu is a computer operating system from the long line of Linux distributions. An operating system is the software that specializes in managing your computer’s various resources, allowing you to interact with the machine. Microsoft Windows an operating system, Mac OS X is an operating system, and so is Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is built upon the Linux kernel and it’s free software ideologies. A kernel implements the most basic operations of a computer, forming the basic platform upon which an operating system like Ubuntu can be built. The Linux kernel is maintained by many devoted programmers who are dedicated to free, open source software. If you’re one of many people who’ve caught wind of this thing called “Linux” over the past few years, Dell wants to provide the opportunity for you to finally take the plunge. For those who are unimpressed with Windows Vista and apprehensive to thrown down the cash for an expensive Mac, Ubuntu should fill their void quite nicely.
