Minimize Firefox and Thunderbird to the system tray

Monday, May 1, 2006

Have you ever wanted to keep Mozilla Thunderbird open all day long checking your mail, but move its icon somewhere else besides the taskbar? Do you want to preserve all the tabs you’ve got open in Firefox by not closing the browser, but move it out of site for the time being?

The suite of Mozilla applications are powerful, well-designed tools for making the most out of your Internet experience. A main draw for all of them is the high level of customization that’s possible through Mozilla “extensions”. Developers can write add-ons to Mozilla programs called extensions that change the way the program operates, or help it perform a more specialized task better.

One such Mozilla extension that’s targeted towards the aforementioned situations is MinimizeToTray. With MinimizeToTray, you can send Mozilla applications out of the taskbar and into the system tray with a mouse click, a right-click or a keyboard shortcut. Simply click on the “Install” link and the extension will add itself to your system. When you restart Firefox, Thunderbird or any other Mozilla application that you’re using, you’ll benefit from all MinimizeToTray has to offer.
