how about using something contextual that someone would not want to remove due to its use. QR Code , pointing back to where picture is online. if someone does not know about qr codes , it looks like a barcode checkerboard pattern. and its not hard to embed a logo or watermark into it also, creating a win win for everybody. and if you are creative enough in preparing the photo, you can place the barcode link into an area that cannot be cropped or clone tooled away easily. so the would be theif in the end still ends up displaying a link back to the original place it was posted or they end up with aa big ugly distorted(barcode) that could still be read.

I know this is a 'old as dirt' blog article but I just wanted to thank those who can sympathize with the other side of copyright issues. Artist and creators are regarded very lowly in this world, yet everybody is more than willing to consume and yes, STEAL what they make. Artist have right to make a living it's not all about EGO, please give me a break...

And Rob, that looks like a crap site, I rather pay the $45 buck sand just register my work with the government as a collection.

There is a way of keeping people from using your fotos!

You'd register them for free here www.copyclaim.com. By doing that, you will always be able to proove that you were the first person that had posession of the foto -> and therefor you are the eligible copyright holder!

cheers, Rob

it is annoying ppl using ur pics. I have this guy using my pics but I kinda dont care anymore but his emails are interesting. on the sites ppl use ur pics most are myspace and stuff like that. toms making it harder and harder to add stuff like right click disabling and such it isnt worth trying to protect them. to protect them properly would probaly take days to find the right stuff. does anybody really care so much that theyd sit on a computer for days looking for some codeing that ppl willeventually find a way around? if ppl wanna use ppls pics thats there choice but they can never meet the ppl they talk to so really there just wasting there time and probaly have no life. so who cares there just pathetic losers.

the article is accurate. there is no way to protect images on the web. i will agree that the use of flash is a better choice ONLY in the eyes of security. however, that said, any savvy developer using firebug can watch HTTP requests as they happen on the fly and track exact locations of any of these files.
One security aspect people seem to overlook: php. or any other server side scripting for that matter. wanna protect an image? keep it above the root of your site. that is, outside the "public_html" or "www" folder in your hosted ftp account. with the use of php, you can throttle the access to these files directly requiring levels of "authentication" through code. wanna restrict access to only a few IP addresses? want to require a user to be "logged in"? want to allow access to only one picture per hour? look into server-side scripting and you'll find the answer.
as for actual download prevention, if you can see it, then you can steal it.

Sherry: the bottom line here is that these suggestions are only going to slow down the average user. There is no way to stop an educated person from downloading your content from the web. No matter what roadblocks you put in place, someone with enough know-how can download your entire website in one keystroke. The only thing you can do to prevent this is take your website offline.
