How to Uninstall a Program from Windows XP

Saturday, June 23, 2007

I have a lot of programs on my computer that I don’t need anymore. How do I get rid of them?

The Windows XP Control Panel makes getting rid of old software extremely simple. Almost every program you install comes with an “uninstaller”, which is another small program that knows how to remove all the files, registry keys, and other hooks the software package has installed on your computer. By running the uninstaller, you are able to remove all traces of a software package from your computer.

To uninstall a program from your Windows XP PC, follow this process:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click on the Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. You will see a list of all the programs installed on your PC. Locate and click on the one you would like to remove. After you click on the name of the program, “change” and “remove” buttons will appear. Click remove.
  5. The uninstaller routine for that program will begin. Follow all of the directions given by the uninstaller, clicking the Next button to move from step to step.
  6. Once everything is uninstalled, the “Next” button will change to a “Finish” button. Click Finish.

After you click on the “Finish” button, the uninstallation will be complete and the uninstaller will disappear. It is now safe to close the Control Panel.
