Protect Your Laptop in Public Spaces with an Alarm

Wednesday, August 1, 2007

man with a laptop in a public spaceLaptop Alarm is a simple program that sounds an alarm when any one of the following events takes place:

  • Your account is logged out, or your laptop is shut down.
  • Your laptop is disconnected from it’s power supply.
  • Your USB mouse is unplugged.

The idea here is that if you leave your laptop unattended in a public space and someone tries to make off with it, one of these three things is likely to happen. Laptop Alarm will sound, and you will at least have the opportunity to give chase.

Laptop Alarm is Windows-only, but one Mac-specific addition immediately comes to mind: design a laptop alarm to set itself off based on information from the internal gyroscope, which senses movement of the device.

Laptop Alarm seems like an interesting program, but never forget rule #1: don’t leave your laptop unattended in a public space!
