College students across the country will be reporting to school in a few weeks, some for the very first time. Anyone who is campus-bound and wondering what sort of tech gadgets to bring along should read Paul Stamatiou’s “A Realistic Back to School Guide for College Students“. Similar guides from big-time publications are often littered with expensive, impractical gadgets. Paul’s guide is different:
“very year around this time some large gadget or tech website makes a back to school post. Unfortunately, they are under the preposterous assumption that college students can afford very expensive gear.
…
“It’s about time someone set them straight. I’ve been in college long enough to know what works and what doesn’t, so here is my advice to any incoming college freshman.”
One particularly useful piece of advice from Paul pertains to what not to bring.
“What not to do: Don’t bring an entire home theater system. College is not the place for such high-end electronics; it’ll get stolen or your roommates will vandalize it when they’re drunk.”
I cannot emphasize how true this is; I knew too many people in college who had computers, video game consoles, and other electronics stolen from their rooms. If it’s expensive, and you must bring it to school, lock it up. This includes laptops.
