Quickly Search Any Site Using Google

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Here’s a quick Google tip that will help you save time allowing you to search your favorite websites instead of sorting through them. Google can refine any search to a specific website using the site: query modifier.

  1. Head to Google. If you have a browser such as Firefox that features an in-browser search box, send the cursor up there.
    • For added efficiency (in Firefox) press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on Mac) instead of mousing around.
  2. Type your search query and append site:example.com.

If I wanted to search for “mac tips” on ofzenandcomputing.com, I would search Google for mac tips site:ofzenandcomputing.com. The results returned by the search engine will be confined only to pages within the site you have specified.

If you are not familiar with this little trick, try it out a few times. You will quickly realize just how handy it is, especially for sites that do not provide their own search function.
