Microsoft Launches Ho-Hum Response to Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Monday, October 1, 2007

Microsoft Office Live Workspace logoMicrosoft has launched a new product called Office Live Workspace in response to the web-based office productivity suites from Google and Zoho. Office Live Workspace allows Office users to edit and share documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and other files online.

Office Live Workspace provides online storage for Office users’ documents and spreadsheets, eliminating the need to use a flash drive or e-mail in order to transport files. Storage capacity sits around 1,000 documents, and the owner has full control over who can edit and comment on their files.

While web-based applications from competitors such as Google are freely available to everyone, Microsoft’s online offering comes with an inherent fee. Files stored with their new service can only be edited those who own the traditional version of Microsoft Office. Whether Microsoft can win over customers by offering a compromise instead of meeting their demands will remain to be seen, however this author remains doubtful.
