Standards evolve to improve. Otherwise, we'll be locked with 20 years old wordstar format files (prior to wordperfect). When they evolve to get BETTER AND MORE UNIVERSAL, they "change". That much is obvious. Everyone using the same platform and the same file format is to everyone's advantage. Those that want to have computers and software different from the rest must deal with the problems of trying to use data produced by the most common computers and softwares everynow and them. A small inconvinience to them since they DON'T want to use the same software or machines that you and i and just almost everyone elses uses. No big deal.

I'm not a Windows user either.
This is just another scheme from Microsoft to sell more MS Office: If they change the file format every couple of years, then everyone is forced to buy the same product one more time. Clever, but not very nice. Consider other, more ethical companies.

Users (Mac and P.C.) that do not own Microsoft Office, or users of earlier versions of Microsoft Office that are not covered by Microsoft compatibility pack, but still want to open and use Word 2007 DOCX or Excel 2007 XLSX files, can use "docxconverter 2.0" to convert and open docx and xlsx files. See: http://www.panergy-software.com/products/docxconverter/features.html
