Store a file in two or more locations, maintain only one copy

Sunday, March 5, 2006

I have a file that I want to be available in two or more locations on my computer, but only want to maintain one copy.

Browse to the folder where the original version of your file is located. Right-click on the file’s icon and then left-click on “Create Shortcut”. A copy of your file’s icon will appear at the end of the list of files inside the window you’re looking at. Right-click on that new icon and left-click on “Cut”. Now browse to the new place where you want the file to be available, click “Edit” and click “Paste”.

This procedure creates a Shortcut at the new location of your original file, while leaving the original version intact. A shortcut is not a copy of a file – it’s a “pointer”. When you double-click on a Shortcut icon, the Shortcut tells your computer where the original copy of your file is located.
