What to do if your computers randomly serenades you

A photo of musical notes

Computers are always confusing people with random messages, sounds, flashes, and even reboots. Nothing, however, may prepare you for this: certain computers may randomly serenade you with classical music. Unfortunately, your computer has not become infatuated with your striking good looks. Instead, it is warning you impending system failure.

This particularly amusing musical anomaly is actually a design feature of hardware made by Award/Unicore. In systems built as early as 1997, the PC speakers plays “Fur Elise” or “It’s a Small, Small World” to warn that the CPU fan is either failing or has failed, or the power supply is malfunctioning.

So if your computer ever decides to emit classical music, it’s time to make sure your CPU fan and power supply are still in working order.
