Easily Disable Windows Low Disk Space Warning via Command Line

Friday, February 23, 2007

Ah, Windows XP Notification Area Balloons — a well meaning feature that annoys more often than not. Download Squad hits on a particular notification balloon that can get to you after a while — the “Low Disk Space” warning. If you’ve got a hard drive (or drives) that are nearing their capacity, XP will pop-up one of its illustrious balloons to let you know that it’s time to start doing some house cleaning. Over, and over, and over, and over.

The problem is, you may very well know which drives are nearing their capacity, and you may not particularly care. Download Squad shares this sentiment, and so they’ve got a quick and easy one-liner that will make this low disk space warning history.

I went looking for a solution, and I found a few. Most of them involved lengthy descriptions of how to navigate the registry just to add the “NoLowDiskSpaceChecks” key. Here’s a much easier solution; one command line you can cut and paste into any open command prompt window. REM copy here regini HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer "NoLowDiskSpaceChecks" = REG_DWORD 1 REM end copy here (REM lines added to make this easier to copy correctly)

Everything from “regini” to “REG_DWORD 1″ belongs on the same line.

To open up a command prompt in the first place, press the Start button, click Run, type “cmd” and hit the Enter key. Once you’re at the C:> prompt, paste the command shown above and press Enter.
